Sarah’s a Catalyst
“This is really about that.”
I’m not sure who said it first, but I read it in a book by Rob Bell. That’s really what this song is about. The events that make up our lives affect us to varying degrees. Sometimes something that is bothering us in some huge way is really just a safer or more familiar proxy for us to vent on. In this particular situation, angry young ex-convicts duke it out in my kitchen over a promiscuous woman who has left them both lying in ruin. They both try to tear each other apart and the catalyst for the outburst has nothing to do with the rage that flares up and consumes them. She is a spark, an electrical current……..and their emotional wiring and training are gasoline.
And why is she sleeping around with relatively dangerous men? Is she a sucker for punishment? Does she not believe she can be loved and feel safe at the same time? One thing is for sure. There’s more here than meets the eye.
So before we label people as idiots, sluts or thugs, we’d best go find a mirror to look into deeply.
What we see in front of us has a tail like a comet. It has a past.
And a future.
And a lot of momentum.
Remember that every person we cross paths with is so much more than they appear. The person with the happy outlook on life? Just something they picked up along the way……….The person who is always criticizing? For all we know it could go back generations. So, in the words of good old Stephen Covey “Seek first to understand, and then to be understood.”
I’ll try if you do………..Just kidding………I’ll try regardless.
